Episode 22: Behind the Scenes: A Day in My Mom-Entrepreneur Life

Episode 22: Behind the Scenes: A Day in My Mom-Entrepreneur Life

Episode 22: Behind the Scenes: A Day in My Mom-Entrepreneur Life

Today I’m bringing you behind the scenes to show you what it’s like day-to-day in my life and business.

I think it’s so interesting to see how other people live and go about their days.  These peeks behind the curtain can help us to get to know that person better, of course. (And you’ll certainly get to know a bit more about me today.)

They can also give us a new perspective that helps us clarify what our ideal daily life really looks like. That way we can get even more passionate about getting outside of our comfort zone to grow and work toward that goal.

Today I’m going to explore the things I’m most grateful for, the things I’m working to change in my current routine, and what it’s really like for me to navigate work and motherhood.

Along the way, I’ll share the things that help me stay balanced so that you can get some ideas for how they can help you too.

So, let’s get to it!

“I think it’s important to really be grateful for what I do have. And there are things that I really love about my routine. But also to think about, okay, how can I make this just a little bit closer to what that ideal day looks like for me?”

In This Episode We Explore:

  • What a “dream day” exercise is and how it can help you find the aligned (and misaligned) parts of your day-to-day
  • How to align your dream day with your bigger vision and goals
  • What I love about my current routine and how I’ve taken steps to make those things happen
  • What I’m working to shift in my day-to-day and why I’ve decided to make those changes
  • How I experience the benefits of “work from home mom life” in my day
  • Why I don’t compromise when it comes to health and sleep

Episode 21: How to build genuine relationships in business with Rohana Olson

Rohana Olson is a wedding photographer based in Minnesota and has been photographing weddings for just shy of five years. She has the heart to serve and encourages others to chase their dreams. Episode 20:Why Taking a Solo Business Retreat is a Solid Investment

Episode 20: Why taking a solo business retreat is a solid investment

If you’re anything like me you may have traveled for work before, perhaps to a conference or to a client meeting. But a solo business retreat is completely different. I did my first solo business retreat in 2019 and it brought so much clarity to my business that I really wanted to share exactly how I did it.

So, in today’s episode, I’m talking about taking a solo business retreat and giving you practical tips for planning, executing, and returning from your retreat that will help you to get the greatest impact from the experience.

From clearing your calendar to selecting the location to prioritizing “to do’s” to reflecting on your accomplishments with gratitude and grace, we’ll explore how to make your first (or next) solo business retreat one that helps you move the needle on your big goals.

Let’s get to it!

“I can’t think big in little pockets of time. One of the greatest benefits is being able to think bigger and strategize with big projects and larger chunks of time than you have in daily life.”

In This Episode We Explore:

  • Why you’ll want to plan your next business retreat ASAP if you want to make big moves in your business
  • What to do if you need to keep your retreat low key and local right now
  • How to make the most of your retreat time
  • Why taking a solo business retreat gives you a better chance of getting those big tasks done than just scheduling them during normal business hours
  • What to do before you leave for your retreat
  • How to ensure you return feeling refreshed and energized to keep moving forward with confidence

Episode 18: How to Stop Feeling Overwhelmed and Overworked with Rachel Bearbower

Podcast Episode 18: How to Stop Feeling Overwhelmed and Overworked with Rachel Bearbower

Today, I am talking with my friend Rachel Bearbower. She’s a coffee lover, a fundraiser, a former nonprofit executive director, and founder of Small Shop Strategies. She’s an executive coach living in rural Iowa and she’s passionate about creating meaningful relationships, maintaining an upbeat attitude, and serving alongside though she leads.

Rachel has been in the very same situation many of us find ourselves in at some point: working diligently in an underfunded, systemless organization.

And she knows firsthand the stress, overwhelm and frustration it can cause. Let’s just say that she is scrappy or resilient and resourceful. She is the one we turn to for our systems, structure, and plan. And once those are in place, she knows that you’ll have more time to serve those who mean the most to you and your organization.

And when she’s not hanging out over on Instagram stories and coaching small shop nonprofit executive directors, she is living on a farm where she’s a farmer in training (With six acres to tend before the next Zoom call!).

In our conversation, we explore how Rachel’s business journey, which had an unlikely start, led her all the way to creating her business after running a nonprofit.

We also explore how Rachel serves her clients, nonprofit executive directors, how she manages her numbers, and what guidance she’d offer any entrepreneur or leader who’s feeling overworked, underfunded, and overwhelmed.

So, if those feelings sound familiar to you, you won’t want to miss what Rachel shares with us today.

Let’s get to it.

“It starts with you. And it starts with your mindset. So, once you decide that you can reframe your mindset, have maybe a better attitude, and then real change can happen.”

In This Episode We Explore:

  • How creating and working on her first nonprofit allowed Rachel to see an area of need that she addresses with her own business
  • The common challenges that people, especially executive directors who work in the nonprofit sector need to navigate and how Rachel helps change the game
  • How to navigate imposter syndrome and a scarcity mindset in your business
  • Why women entrepreneurs having money and numbers conversations is so vital and why making money is a form of self-care
  • What it means to start trusting your gut, shifting your mindset, taking risks, and getting a handle on your finances with confidence

Episode 17: Bouncing Back After Getting Burned in Your Business

Podcast graphic for episode 17 Bouncing Back After Getting Burned in Your Business

Today on the podcast I’m sharing with you one of the most important lessons I’ve learned as an entrepreneur: What it takes to bounce back after a tough misstep or challenge.

Being burned can look like a client who doesn’t pay, a vendor who under delivers (or fails to deliver at all) or someone who’s just not meeting expectations. And whether you’ve been in business for a while or are just starting out, this episode is an excellent reminder that these “burns” happen no matter how amazingly we do our jobs or serve our clients.

When you’re making an impact and growing your business it takes strength and resilience to overcome difficult times and to allow them to be happening “for us”, not simply “to us”.

If you’re wondering how to bounce back from being burned, you’ll find my practical, go-to strategies and helpful mindset practices in this episode and I know they’ll serve you as well as they’ve served me.

So let’s get to it.

“This isn’t happening to me. This is happening for me.”

In This Episode We Explore:

  • What true entrepreneurs do when they take a hit in business
  • What mindset practices and key mantras can help you reframe and re-approach challenges in your work life
  • The one thing I would do differently if I could start my business over again and why it’s so vital when things don’t go according to plan
  • Why legal and financial foundations are the most important parts of your business, especially when you meet a challenge or need to recover after being burned

Episode 16: Pivoting On Purpose to Create Your Dream Life With Amy Irvine

Podcast Episode 16: Pivoting On Purpose to Create Your Dream Life With Amy Irvine

My guest on today’s episode, financial planner Amy Irvine, is passionate about three things: family, finances, and wine. Amy holds a master’s degree in financial planning and is a certified financial planner with over 26 years of financial planning experience. She’s the founder and owner of Rooted Planning Group, formed in 2016, which now includes five other planners and three part-time staff members.

Amy has been recognized by her financial planning colleagues as a disruptor, a title she proudly holds close to her heart. And at the age of 44 she decided to not only start her own company but to act on what she defined as her perfect life. She now splits her time between western New York and Florida. In 2018 she decided it was time to take the stigma out of finances by combining her passion for finances and wine. She started a podcast called Wine and Dime which highlights a different wine and financial topic each week. And she released her book combining those same two passions titled Uncork Your Finances.

Today Amy and I talk about pivoting your business with purpose and how she helps her clients make their dreams a reality, not just “someday” or “when they retire” but right now.

So if you’re wondering if that life you’re desiring is really possible, and you want to know how to get there, this episode is for you.

Now, let’s get to it.

In This Episode We Explore:

  • How your mindset impacts the possible solutions you see when you’re faced with a decision
  • How pivoting with purpose can help you act now in ways that get you to the future you truly desire and how to handle the resistance that might come up when you do so
  • Why “Well, when I retire…” isn’t the way to grow or move forward and what Amy helps her clients do instead
  • Why pivoting your mindset around delegating is essential to preserving your business’ greatest resource: your time
  • The tough but necessary questions you can ask yourself when you feel a pivot in your life or business just might be the next right move

Episode 13: Behind The Scenes Of How I Spend Money In My Business

Podcast graphic for episode 13 Behind The Scenes Of How I Spend Money In My Business

Let’s talk numbers.

No. Not in an overly technical sense. But in a truly purposeful sense.

Today on the podcast I’m sharing how I spend money in my business. Because the truth is that where we spend our money says a great deal about what we value.

Whether it’s using our money to build an amazing team, investing in furthering our professional education with trainings and courses, or investing in a consistent branding and marketing plan to make sure our message gets out more effectively, we make value-based decisions with our money every time we spend.

And we also need to get to know our numbers so we can tell if an investment is giving us a return that’s worth it.

So today I’m bringing some clarity to how I make money-related decisions in my business and giving you a strategy for making better, more aligned spending decisions in yours.

Let’s get to it.

“We want to make sure that what we’re spending on is attached to a goal that we have, or a value that we have, or something that’s really important to us.”

In This Episode We Explore:

  • How what we spend money on is connected to the values we hold within our business
  • Where I spend money in my business and how I’ve made those decisions
  • How I’ve made decisions about larger investment opportunities like masterminds, full-time employees
  • How to dig into your profit and loss statement for insight on whether those investments are paying off
