Episode 26: 8 Questions to Ask When Hiring a Bookkeeper

8 Questions to Ask When Hiring a Bookkeeper featured image for blog post

What do you need to know when hiring a bookkeeper and how can we make this important process less daunting?

Hmmm… If only hiring a rockstar bookkeeper were as simple as jumping into Google and searching, “bookkeeper for (x) type of business” or “bookkeepers in my city.”

(deep contemplative sigh)

Until Google figures out a way to pair us up with our bookkeeping soulmate, I think the best place to start when hiring anyone for your team or organization is to…

ASK THE RIGHT QUESTIONS.

In fact, in this episode, I’ll share 8 important questions that you should ask a candidate, what to expect, and some must-have money tools to make accounting easier for everyone involved.

So, grab your favorite notebook & pen, we’ve got a lot of ground to cover!

“What you focus on expands. Where your attention goes, the energy flows – the same goes with money.”

In this episode, we explore:

  • 8 questions to ask when hiring or outsourcing a bookkeeper
  • What additional factors to consider when interviewing a potential bookkeeper
  • What to deliverables should you expect from a bookkeeper
  • Industry standard tools that make bookkeeping a breeze

The 4 Elements of a Personal Brand with Mike Kim featured blog post image

Have you ever seen-zoned and unfollowed people and wondered if the same thing is happening to YOUR personal brand?

A lot of people think that building a personal brand is easy. They are under the assumption that branding success lies in making the most noise, networking with the top industry experts, bearing your soul to the world, and getting the most number of likes… but this, at best, an incomplete concept.

You can be the loudest person in the room, but if there’s no value to what you’re preaching, it will not entice people to stay.

You can also be the smartest person in the room, but if your audience can’t relate to your story, then it won’t make them stay.

So, how do we stop all this tiptoeing around our audience and build a more sustainable relationship with them?

Joining us in this episode to dive deep into how we can build an authentic personal brand is my mentor, trailblazing brand strategist, renowned speaker, and author of the best selling book, ‘You Are the Brand: The 8-Step Blueprint to Showcase Your Unique Expertise and Build a Highly Profitable, Personally Fulfilling Business’ — MIKE KIM.

There’ll be a lot of AHA moments in this conversation that you do not want to miss!

“Branding is all about identity.”

In This Episode We Explore:

  • How to make your brand stand out in a near endless sea of (marketing) noise
  • The 4 components of a personal brand according to Mike Kim
  • What being authentic online means (and why oversharing doesn’t count as authenticity!)
  • The power of storytelling and what it can do for your business

Episode 24: What I Learned About Launching a Podcast

So, if you’ve been thinking about launching a podcast, or putting yourself (and your business) out there in a new way, I hope you can feel the encouragement in this episode.

Let’s get to it.

In this episode, we explore:

  • What podcast processes and procedures my team and I have put in place to make this whole thing happen

Episode 23: The Most Boring Secret Weapon to Amplifying Your Brand with Jessi Robinson

Episode 23: The Most Boring Secret Weapon to Amplifying Your Brand with Jessi Robinson

I’m excited to introduce today’s podcast guest because not only is she one of my business besties, she’s also an amazing entrepreneur who runs an award-winning agency.

Jessi Robinson is the founder and creative director of PNP Creative, a branding and web design agency based in Kentucky. After spending more than a decade in a corporate communications role, Jessi founded PNP Creative. What began as a freelance side hustle has grown into an award-winning full-service agency.

She leads a creative team that works with community-driven organizations in Appalachia and beyond. Her company regularly works within the tourism, economic development, and community development sectors creating marketing materials that empower communities to tell their stories, attract their people, and help their region grow. She lives in Mount Sterling, Kentucky with her husband, two children, and beloved Doberman, Vinny. And when not leading the PMP creative team, you can most often find her on a nearby soccer field, cheering on her daughter, cringing at her son’s latest Daredevil dirt bike stunt, or playing with Vinny as often as she can.

Our conversation today is one that will help you approach branding from a whole new perspective and Jessi shares plenty of useful tips for those who are making a leap or shifting their businesses too. She also shares insight into the more challenging things she’s navigated. And, while she’s already my business bestie, I know you’ll love her too!

And so if you are representing one thing in your visual identity and in your messaging, then you’d better be backing that up with every client or partner interaction.

“If you are representing something in your visual identity and in your messaging, then you’d better be backing that up with every client interaction.”

In This Episode We Explore:

  • Why you should double down on consistency when it comes to growing your business
  • The three intersecting areas that make up your brand and what happens if they’re not in alignment
  • Why giving yourself a runway before a pivot or transition is so valuable and what that looked like for Jessi as she struck out on her own
  • What it means to have all of your branding should tie into your core values
  • How Jessi navigated the tougher things that come along with a big leap from solopreneur to agency owner

Episode 22: Behind the Scenes: A Day in My Mom-Entrepreneur Life

Today I’m bringing you behind the scenes to show you what it’s like day-to-day in my life and business.

I think it’s so interesting to see how other people live and go about their days.  These peeks behind the curtain can help us to get to know that person better, of course. (And you’ll certainly get to know a bit more about me today.)

They can also give us a new perspective that helps us clarify what our ideal daily life really looks like. That way we can get even more passionate about getting outside of our comfort zone to grow and work toward that goal.

Today I’m going to explore the things I’m most grateful for, the things I’m working to change in my current routine, and what it’s really like for me to navigate work and motherhood.

So, let’s get to it!

In This Episode We Explore:

  • What a “dream day” exercise is and how it can help you find the aligned (and misaligned) parts of your day-to-day
  • How to align your dream day with your bigger vision and goals

Episode 20:Why Taking a Solo Business Retreat is a Solid Investment

Episode 20: Why taking a solo business retreat is a solid investment

If you’re anything like me you may have traveled for work before, perhaps to a conference or to a client meeting. But a solo business retreat is completely different. I did my first solo business retreat in 2019 and it brought so much clarity to my business that I really wanted to share exactly how I did it.

So, in today’s episode, I’m talking about taking a solo business retreat and giving you practical tips for planning, executing, and returning from your retreat that will help you to get the greatest impact from the experience.

From clearing your calendar to selecting the location to prioritizing “to do’s” to reflecting on your accomplishments with gratitude and grace, we’ll explore how to make your first (or next) solo business retreat one that helps you move the needle on your big goals.

Let’s get to it!

“I can’t think big in little pockets of time. One of the greatest benefits is being able to think bigger and strategize with big projects and larger chunks of time than you have in daily life.”

In This Episode We Explore:

  • Why you’ll want to plan your next business retreat ASAP if you want to make big moves in your business
  • What to do if you need to keep your retreat low key and local right now
  • How to make the most of your retreat time

  • How to ensure you return feeling refreshed and energized to keep moving forward with confidence

Episode 18: How to Stop Feeling Overwhelmed and Overworked with Rachel Bearbower

Podcast Episode 18: How to Stop Feeling Overwhelmed and Overworked with Rachel Bearbower

Today, I am talking with my friend Rachel Bearbower. She’s a coffee lover, a fundraiser, a former nonprofit executive director, and founder of Small Shop Strategies. She’s an executive coach living in rural Iowa and she’s passionate about creating meaningful relationships, maintaining an upbeat attitude, and serving alongside though she leads.

Rachel has been in the very same situation many of us find ourselves in at some point: working diligently in an underfunded, systemless organization.

And she knows firsthand the stress, overwhelm and frustration it can cause. Let’s just say that she is scrappy or resilient and resourceful. She is the one we turn to for our systems, structure, and plan. And once those are in place, she knows that you’ll have more time to serve those who mean the most to you and your organization.

And when she’s not hanging out over on Instagram stories and coaching small shop nonprofit executive directors, she is living on a farm where she’s a farmer in training (With six acres to tend before the next Zoom call!).

In our conversation, we explore how Rachel’s business journey, which had an unlikely start, led her all the way to creating her business after running a nonprofit.

We also explore how Rachel serves her clients, nonprofit executive directors, how she manages her numbers, and what guidance she’d offer any entrepreneur or leader who’s feeling overworked, underfunded, and overwhelmed.

So, if those feelings sound familiar to you, you won’t want to miss what Rachel shares with us today.

Let’s get to it.

“It starts with you. And it starts with your mindset. So, once you decide that you can reframe your mindset, have maybe a better attitude, and then real change can happen.”

In This Episode We Explore:

  • How creating and working on her first nonprofit allowed Rachel to see an area of need that she addresses with her own business
  • The common challenges that people, especially executive directors who work in the nonprofit sector need to navigate and how Rachel helps change the game
  • How to navigate imposter syndrome and a scarcity mindset in your business
  • Why women entrepreneurs having money and numbers conversations is so vital and why making money is a form of self-care
  • What it means to start trusting your gut, shifting your mindset, taking risks, and getting a handle on your finances with confidence

Episode 17: Bouncing Back After Getting Burned in Your Business

Podcast graphic for episode 17 Bouncing Back After Getting Burned in Your Business

Today on the podcast I’m sharing with you one of the most important lessons I’ve learned as an entrepreneur: What it takes to bounce back after a tough misstep or challenge.

Being burned can look like a client who doesn’t pay, a vendor who under delivers (or fails to deliver at all) or someone who’s just not meeting expectations. And whether you’ve been in business for a while or are just starting out, this episode is an excellent reminder that these “burns” happen no matter how amazingly we do our jobs or serve our clients.

When you’re making an impact and growing your business it takes strength and resilience to overcome difficult times and to allow them to be happening “for us”, not simply “to us”.

If you’re wondering how to bounce back from being burned, you’ll find my practical, go-to strategies and helpful mindset practices in this episode and I know they’ll serve you as well as they’ve served me.

So let’s get to it.

“This isn’t happening to me. This is happening for me.”

In This Episode We Explore:

  • What true entrepreneurs do when they take a hit in business
  • What mindset practices and key mantras can help you reframe and re-approach challenges in your work life
  • The one thing I would do differently if I could start my business over again and why it’s so vital when things don’t go according to plan
  • Why legal and financial foundations are the most important parts of your business, especially when you meet a challenge or need to recover after being burned
