Episode 90: Investing in Your Business

Episode 90 Investing in Your Business

In this podcast episode, Stephanie Skryzowski talks about the importance of investing in your business. Most of us need to spend money to make money, but how do we know what we need to buy or which programs to invest in? With so many options at our fingertips, it can be hard to sort through the noise and figure out where to focus both our time AND money.

Pulling from experience gained over the years and wise words from past podcast guests, Stephanie narrows down four important steps to take. Investing in your business can be overwhelming, but is one of the most important things you can do to ensure growth. If you often feel pulled in a hundred different directions while building your business, you’ll want to grab a pen and paper and tune in!

Keep it simple. We don’t need to do all the new things because that new thing looks really fun. We need to keep doing more of what’s working. So you first need to understand the return on investment on different things that you’re doing right now and cut out what is not generating a return and add in more of whatever is generating a return.

– Stephanie Skryzowski

Stephanie’s Top 4 Tips for Investing in Your Business:

  1. Spend money strategically by keeping it simple, and understanding what’s working in your business
  2. Go all in on one thing at a time
  3. Think about your future self as a business owner
  4. Invest in the foundation of your business

Episode 89: Building Authority in Your Business

Episode 89 Stephanie Srkyzowski

Join us today for a solo episode with Stephanie Skryzowski! On this episode of the podcast, Stephanie talks about the importance of establishing yourself as the expert in your field, and building authority in your brand or business. If you’ve ever wondered how people are asked to speak or present again and again, you’ll want to tune in!

With years of experience under her belt, Stephanie has worked at understanding the right (and wrong!) ways of establishing herself as an expert in the finance industry. She knows what it’s like to be at the beginning of the journey without a clear roadmap. She also has been on the receiving end of communication and pitches that feel disingenuous. After listening to this episode, you’ll better understand the importance of relationships and carving out time in your work week for authority building activities.

I feel like when you start to be “strategic” is when things start sounding completely fake. So if I wouldn’t do it in person, if I wouldn’t say it in person, I don’t do it online. – Stephanie Skryzowski

In this episode, you’ll learn:

  1. Why not to copy and paste a template
  2. How to play the long game with your business or brand.
  3. The key to writing genuine, heartfelt pitches and knowing where to focus your time and energy.
  4. Understanding the importance of sharing some of your knowledge for free
  5. The impact of spending time on the right activities that will build your authority.

Episode 87: Building Community with Lauren Davis

Lauren Davis episode 87

Today we are talking to Lauren Davis. Lauren is the founder of Lauren Davis Creative, a marketing and branding consultancy that will help you create memorable personal branding messages that convert to engagement and life-long clients.

Lauren’s entrepreneurial journey began as a child with a neighborhood business and a construction paper business plan. From there, she worked with her family’s small business, eventually opening a successful record store and founding a non-profit organization.

While at the record store, she noticed local entrepreneurs were feeling down. She realized she had a passion for entrepreneurs and small businesses. In 2010, she started a non-profit for local companies to educate themselves, get to know each other, and collaborate across networks. This non-profit is thriving, with over a thousand local members!

Lauren recognizes our innate need to belong and understands the role of social media in building connections. She loves helping clients find a social media strategy that isn’t only focused on quick hacks but constructing a personalized brand identity.

“I just kept practicing and practicing, leaning into fear whenever possible and changing it into excitement. That’s what I’ve done my whole life – all of my businesses, everything I’ve created and crafted over the years – has been a product of leaning into fear.” – Lauren Davis

Things we discuss:

  • How Lauren moves through challenges and decides what path to take.
  • Why social media is the #1 free tool at your fingertips for building community and telling your story.
  • The importance of conducting an informal audience audit, so you can better connect with your audience.

Episode 86 Naomi Genota

Episode 86: Engineering to Influencer Marketing with Naomi Genota

Episode 86 Naomi Genota

Joining us on this week’s podcast is Naomi Genota.

Naomi is a New York-based content creator, online educator, and talent manager at Booth Society. In this episode, we’re getting down to the nitty-gritty about how she went from working as a structural engineer making six figures to doing content creation full time.

Before a family vacation to the Philippines, Naomi was offered a raise at her engineering job. After the initial excitement wore off, she questioned whether climbing the corporate ladder even aligned with her values.

Naomi also shares a realistic picture of what the transition to full-time content creation is like. For her, this meant juggling both the engineer job with her growing social media business before making the leap. As a result, she is able to effectively help her clients create similar paths for themselves. Above all, what really strikes me most about Naomi is that she truly loves seeing people succeed. There is no gate keeping here, so if you’ve ever wondered what it takes to make money with social media, you’ll love this episode.

“There wasn’t really a lot of guidance or people sharing information. It was very secretive, and that’s the opposite energy of what I want to bring to this space. I want people to be equipped to succeed. There’s so much opportunity.”  – Naomi Genota

Things you’ll learn:

  • Naomi’s path from engineer to influencer
  • How she built a business that replaced her 6 figure engineering job
  • The specific engineering skill sets she still uses in her content creation role
  • The truth about being a full time content creator (spoiler alert, it doesn’t typically happen overnight!)
  • The ways she helps others find brand deals and partnerships
  • Information about her online course that assists content creators in building a solid business foundation.

Recession Proof your Business

Episode 81: How to Recession Proof Your Business

Recession Proof Your Business

If you’ve seen or heard the news lately, you’re probably keeping an eye on the recession forecasts. As a business owner, these predictions can be unsettling and discouraging. Will all your blood, sweat, and tears be for nothing due to something entirely out of your control?

While we don’t know what will happen down the road (we’ll leave that to the economists!), we DO know there are steps every business owner can take to recession proof their business. The best part is that these action steps are good practice for all businesses, recession or not.

In this episode, Stephanie shares her top 6 action items to ensure your business will not only survive the unpredictable, but truly thrive.

Let’s dive in.

6 Tips to Recession Proof your Business

    1. Strategic Planning: include finances in your strategic plan and set clear intentions so you’re able to be proactive instead of reactive.
    2. Cash Reserve: now is the time to take a hard look at your cash flow and come up with a plan to increase your cash reserve. Have a specific goal and number in mind and work toward that.
    3. Get Caught Up: Make sure your current finances are caught up so you’re able to organize and create processes that establish stability.
    4. Diversify Revenue Streams: Brainstorm a variety of ways to diversify your current revenue streams. Work toward a goal of having no more than a certain percentage of your revenue coming from one specific stream.
    5. Manage Expenses: Evaluate what you’re spending your money on and get clear on the ROI – is the money spent worth it or is it something you should cut or put on pause for now?
    6. Evaluate Relationships: Understand your contracts and expectations, as well as any potential penalties. Remember there is a human behind every business and building relationships can help if flexibility is needed in the future.

Having the right processes in place is essential now so that you are ready. We are all about being proactive instead of reactive.” – Stephanie Skryzowski

What you’ll learn in this episode:

  • The action steps Stephanie recommends to recession proof your businesses, whether it happens or not
  • Why it’s vital to think of your finances as a department within your business
  • The importance of not letting fear drive your business and economic decisions
  • The how and why each step will set you up for economic growth and stability

Episode 80 – Connecting Your Work to a Bigger Purpose with Suzi Howk

Today on the podcast, you’ll hear from CFO Consultant Suzi Howk. Suzi and I sit down to talk about connecting to your work in a mission-oriented way. We chat about how remote work fits into that equation, allowing her to serve her clients and how it’s benefited her family.

Suzi grew up with entrepreneurial parents and discovered a natural affinity for numbers. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Agricultural Business from Iowa State University and began working with an agricultural nonprofit after graduation. She spent 15 years there helping with all things administration and finance before joining the remote team at 100 Degrees Consulting. Suzi and I discuss what that transition was like and how her previous role helps her connect to her current clients.

She’s passionate about finance and working with her clients as a strategic business partner. She firmly believes organizations make better decisions when they fully understand their finances. We are so excited to have Suzi on the team, and even more excited to chat with her on the podcast.

“I love the number part of it. I have always said you can’t make good decisions unless you know your numbers and understand your numbers well.” – Suzi Howk

What you’ll learn in this episode:

  • How Suzi’s upbringing influenced her love of finances, and how she’s used that knowledge to move from administration into finance throughout her career.
  • What it was like to transition to a fully remote position and the pros and cons of working from home.
  • Her mission-minded moment and how that inspires her in her current role.
  • How remote work provides a company with the ability to tap into the most talented employees in the industry.
  • How better understanding finances can help a company build sustainably and create a lasting impact.
